Health and Safety policy
Health and Safety Policy for Removal Van Ruislip
Removal Van Ruislip is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, customers, contractors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and transport activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and unloading.
Policy Statement
We recognise our responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry guidance. Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing sensible control measures across all our operations and service areas.
Management at Removal Van Ruislip will provide the leadership, resources and training necessary to ensure that health and safety is an integral part of planning and delivering every removal service. All employees are expected to cooperate fully with this policy and follow the safe systems of work provided.
Responsibilities
The company management is responsible for ensuring that this policy is implemented, communicated, reviewed and where necessary updated. Specific responsibilities include:
Ensuring risk assessments are carried out for removal activities, transport routes, storage, and use of equipment. Providing appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision for staff to perform their duties safely. Supplying and maintaining suitable work equipment, vehicles, tools and personal protective equipment in a safe condition. Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses and taking corrective action to prevent recurrence.
Employees are responsible for taking reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safe working procedures, use equipment correctly, report hazards or defects, and cooperate in any investigation or improvement measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before undertaking any removal, a risk assessment is carried out, which may include a site visit or detailed discussion with the customer. This assessment considers access routes, stairways, parking and loading points, floor conditions, weather, manual handling requirements, and any special items such as pianos, safes or fragile goods.
From this assessment, we develop safe working practices for loading, unloading, and transport. Our teams are briefed on relevant hazards and control measures prior to starting work. If conditions differ significantly from what was expected, the team leader will reassess the risks and adapt the work plan as required.
Manual Handling and Lifting
Manual handling is a key aspect of removals work, and we place strong emphasis on safe lifting methods. All staff receive training in correct manual handling techniques, including assessing load weight and shape, team lifting, use of handling aids and recognising personal limits.
Where possible, we use appropriate equipment such as sack trucks, dollies, skates and straps to reduce manual strain. Heavy or awkward items are moved only by suitably trained personnel using planned methods. No employee is required to lift or carry any item they believe to be unsafe for themselves or for others.
Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards
Our vehicles are maintained in a roadworthy and safe condition, with regular inspections and servicing. Drivers are required to carry out pre-use checks, report any defects immediately and follow company procedures for maintenance and repair.
Drivers must comply with road traffic laws, speed limits and safe driving practices at all times. Loads are secured properly using straps and protective materials to prevent movement and damage during transit. Routes are planned to allow for safe access to residential streets, commercial premises and loading areas across our service region.
Use of Equipment and Personal Protective Equipment
All tools, trolleys, ramps and other work equipment provided by Removal Van Ruislip are selected and maintained for safe use in moving household and office items. Equipment is inspected regularly, and any defective item is removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Where necessary, staff are provided with appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear and high visibility garments. Employees are required to use such equipment correctly and report any loss or damage immediately.
Customer Premises and Public Safety
We recognise our duty to protect customers, their property and members of the public while carrying out removals. Our teams work carefully within homes, offices and shared spaces, taking steps to minimise trip hazards and obstructions.
Cables, ramps and equipment are positioned to avoid blocking exits and walkways. Where there is unavoidable risk to others, our team will use barriers, signage or spotters, and will communicate clearly with anyone in the vicinity. We strive to keep noise, disturbance and disruption to a minimum during all moves.
Training, Communication and Consultation
Health and safety training forms part of our induction for new staff and is refreshed periodically. Training covers safe manual handling, vehicle safety, use of equipment, emergency procedures, and customer care. Additional instruction is given for specialist tasks or equipment as required.
We encourage open communication about health and safety. Employees are consulted on changes that may affect their work and are invited to raise any concerns or suggestions for improvement. Issues reported are taken seriously and addressed promptly.
Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, injuries, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported to management as soon as reasonably practicable. We maintain records of such events and review them to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
Our teams are instructed in basic emergency procedures, including first aid arrangements, fire safety awareness and what to do in case of vehicle breakdown or collision. At customer premises, team leaders will familiarise themselves with any relevant emergency exits and procedures.
Review of Policy
This Health and Safety Policy is reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes in our operations, legislation or best practice. Removal Van Ruislip is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance and to maintaining high standards of protection for our staff, customers and the public throughout our service area.
